History of McCall Elementary

The school is named in honor of David B. McCall Jr. (1924–2004), a respected educator, coach, and community leader who played a significant role in the early development of public education in Plano. After moving to Plano in 1946, Mr. McCall devoted himself to serving students and families during a time of rapid growth and change in the community. From 1952 to 1955, he served as a principal in the district and helped lay the groundwork for what would become one of Texas’s most recognized school systems.

Notably, Mr. McCall was the first principal of Plano’s first separate elementary school, the original Mendenhall Elementary School, which opened in 1952. His leadership marked an important milestone in Plano’s educational history, as the district transitioned to dedicated elementary campuses designed to better serve a growing student population. As both a principal and coach, he was known for building strong relationships with students and staff while fostering high standards for achievement and character.

Today, McCall Elementary continues to honor its namesake’s legacy by promoting academic excellence, leadership, and community involvement. As a public elementary school within Plano ISD, McCall offers a strong instructional foundation and specialized programs, including Gifted & Talented services, designed to meet the diverse needs of its learners. The school’s culture of high expectations, innovation, and care reflects the vision first championed by David B. McCall Jr.—a vision that continues to guide McCall Elementary as it prepares each new generation of students for success.
